Abortion Risks

Is abortion a safe procedure?
The chances of having physical complications from an abortion vary greatly depending on the type of clinic where the abortion is performed, the doctor performing the procedure, the type of procedure performed, and the number of weeks old the unborn child is. However, no matter what the circumstances are, the following physical complications can occur:

  • - Perforation of the uterus1
  • - Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (P.I.D.)2
  • - Hemorrhage
  • - Infection

Are there any long-term physical effects of abortion?
There are several long term risks associated with abortion, including: Tubal pregnancies: increased risk of 30% after one abortion, 160% after 2 or more abortions3 Placenta previa in future pregnancies (600% greater risk)4 Miscarriage (risk is tripled)5 Decreased maternal bonding which can lead to future child abuse6 Possible increased risk of breast cancer7

How is an abortion going to affect me emotionally?
Emotional effects vary from woman to woman, but post-abortion grief has been identified as a serious complication of induced abortion.8 About 50% of post abortive women experience emotional and psychological disturbances such as depression, insomnia, nervousness, guilt, and regret, symptoms that can last for 9 months.

The emotional side effects and considerable psychological toll from abortion is not completely understood until it’s done. However, up-front and honest assessment of abortion’s impact – which is part of Turning Point’s abortion information – will help you make the decision that’s best for you. An important fact about abortion education and support is this: many women, if given the second chance with all the available data, would choose alternatives besides abortion.

Emergency contraception

What is emergency contraception (EC)? Often called the "morning after pill" EC is a single pill that contains a large amount of a progestin hormone (levonorgestrel) found in some birth control pills. It works primarily by preventing the egg and sperm from meeting. Side effects may include changes in your period, nausea, lower abdominal pain, tiredness, headache, and dizziness. If your period is more than a week late, you may be pregnant.

If you’re considering abortion because of contraception failure, contact Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center. Exploring additional possibilities and alternatives is an important part of our abortion information resources.
